How Often Should You Change Engine Oil?

How Often Should YouChange Engine Oil?

How often to change engine oil is set by the manufacturer's schedule: an interval by mileage or by time, whichever comes first. Most schedules also give a shorter interval for "severe conditions" — city traffic, short trips, mountain roads, heat and dust — and that is how most cars in Batumi are driven, so the shorter interval is the safer choice.

What "severe conditions" means

Many drivers are surprised, but most manufacturers include ordinary city driving in this definition:

  • frequent short trips when the engine never fully warms up;
  • traffic and long idling — mileage grows slowly while engine hours keep running;
  • mountain roads and loaded climbs, towing;
  • heat, high humidity, dusty and gravel roads;
  • aggressive driving, frequent hard acceleration.

In these conditions oil oxidizes faster, gets contaminated with combustion products and fuel, and loses viscosity. So following the "long" interval from an oil ad while driving in town is a risk for the engine.

What else affects the interval

  • Turbo engine — the turbo runs hot and is demanding about oil quality.
  • Direct injection — fuel gets into the oil more often and thins it.
  • Engine age and condition — a worn engine contaminates oil more and may consume it.
  • Fuel quality.
  • Oil type — but only within the manufacturer's approval.

Synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral

What matters more than the label is the viscosity and approval from the owner's manual: the SAE grade and the manufacturer's spec (or ACEA/API). Synthetic oils hold their properties better when hot and at cold start, and are more often required for modern engines. Pouring in "expensive synthetic" with the wrong approval is worse than the right mid-range oil. If there is no manual, the approval can be found by VIN and engine model.

Signs the oil is due earlier

  • the service reminder on the dashboard comes on;
  • the dipstick level is below normal and you keep topping up;
  • the oil is very dark and thick, smells burnt or of fuel;
  • light-colored emulsion on the dipstick or cap — a reason for diagnostics, coolant may be getting in;
  • the engine has become noisier, especially when cold.

A red oil pressure light is a different case: stop, switch off the engine and check the level — driving on can destroy the bearings within minutes.

Dark color alone is not a verdict: detergent additives are designed to keep soot in suspension. Time, mileage and conditions decide.

Why the filter is changed with the oil

The oil filter traps wear particles and soot. Pour fresh oil through an old clogged filter, and some dirt returns to the system; with heavy clogging the bypass valve may open and oil flows unfiltered. So the filter is replaced at every oil change.

Check the level between changes

Some engines allow a small oil consumption within the manufacturer's norm. Check the dipstick every few fill-ups on level ground with the engine off. A sharp rise in consumption is a reason for diagnostics.

How much it costs

The final price is made up of the engine's oil capacity, its grade and approval, the filter and, if you wish, a check of other fluids and filters. At PRO SERVICE: oil change labor from … GEL, time about 30 minutes. A scheduled service is priced separately.

Where to change oil in Batumi

PRO SERVICE, Airport Highway 212, Batumi, does an oil and filter change with oil to the manufacturer's approval. If a full scheduled service is due, see service by the schedule.

FAQ

If the car barely moves, can I skip the oil change?

No — oil ages with time too. That is exactly why the schedule has an interval in years.

Can I switch from semi-synthetic to synthetic?

Yes, if the oil matches the approval and viscosity. A flush is usually not needed.

Is an engine flush needed at the change?

Usually not. It is sometimes done if the interval was greatly exceeded or nobody knows what was in there.

Can I mix different oils when topping up?

In an emergency — same viscosity grade and approval. Better to carry a bottle of the oil already in the engine.
