The spec matters more than the brand

Besides viscosity (for example 5W-30), the bottle lists classes and approvals: API, ACEA and approvals from specific carmakers. The engine is designed around them. A diesel with a particulate filter needs low-ash oil, and some turbocharged petrol engines need oil approved against low-speed pre-ignition. An "expensive" oil without the right approval is no better, and sometimes worse, than a suitable cheaper one.

What we check at the same time

While the car is on the lift we check the level and condition of the coolant and brake fluid, the accessory belt, leaks from the engine and gearbox, and the CV boots. It takes a few minutes. Often that catches a problem before it gets expensive, for example by booking a coolant change in time.
