Signs of a dirty throttle body

• Hunting or too-low idle speed.
• The engine stalls when you lift off, stop or switch the AC on.
• Hesitation or lag when you press the accelerator.
• The car jerks at low speed in traffic.
• Throttle or idle control fault codes.

Where the dirt comes from: oil vapor reaches the intake through the crankcase ventilation, plus dust if the air filter or intake hose leaks. Carbon builds up on the edge of the plate and the engine gets too little air at idle.

How we clean it

• We read codes and check throttle position and idle speed in live data.
• We check the air filter and the hose after the airflow sensor — a crack causes an air leak with the same symptoms.
• We remove or open the throttle body and clean the housing and plate with a dedicated cleaner. An electronic throttle is never forced open by hand — that damages the motor.
• Refit, replacing the gasket if needed.
• Throttle and idle relearn (adaptation). On many modern cars idle gets worse after cleaning without it.
• Idle check, including with the AC on.

When cleaning is not enough

• The throttle motor or position sensor is worn — the unit needs repair or replacement.
• Air leaks past the throttle: cracked hoses, the crankcase ventilation valve.
