Why it matters
The air filter stops dust and sand before they reach the cylinders. A clogged filter restricts airflow. A torn or badly seated one lets abrasive dirt straight into the engine — wearing rings and cylinders and contaminating the mass airflow (MAF) sensor.
Signs of a clogged filter
- Sluggish acceleration, especially under load and uphill.
- Fuel consumption up for no obvious reason.
- Unstable idle; on some models a Check Engine light from the MAF sensor.
- The filter looks gray or black, with sand, leaves or moisture in the pleats.
The interval is set by the manufacturer. If you often drive on dusty dirt roads, building sites or mountain roads, check it more often — it clogs faster.

- Open the housing, assess the filter and show it to you.
- Clean the housing, check the seal and clips.
- Inspect the intake hose after the filter: a crack there means unfiltered air in the engine.

It's convenient to combine with an oil change and a cabin filter while the car is on the lift.

FAQ
Can I just blow the filter out instead?
Compressed air does not restore a paper filter and can damage it. Reusable (oiled) filters are cleaned following the filter maker's instructions.
Does a dirty filter affect fuel economy?
A badly clogged one — yes, especially on older engines. Modern engine computers partly compensate, but performance drops.
Is an aftermarket filter OK?
Yes, if it matches the size and seal exactly. Cheap filters with a soft frame may not seal against the housing — we don't recommend them.
Can I keep driving with a dirty filter?
For a while, yes — the engine won't stop. But it loses power, burns more fuel, and with a damaged filter dust gets into the cylinders. That costs far more than a filter.
How long does it take?
15-20 min; longer on some models with poor access.
