Which Toyotas we see

Batumi has a lot of Priuses, many imported with high mileage. Besides them — Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, Land Cruiser and Prado. Toyota engines are generally reliable, so problems usually come from mileage, overheating or skipped maintenance.

Prius: what is different

• The engine is part of the hybrid system. It starts and stops on its own, and faults often show up through the hybrid control unit. You need a scanner that reads the hybrid system as well as the engine.
• Safety. Before working near high-voltage wiring the system is de-energised following Toyota's procedure.
• EGR and intake. On a number of Priuses the EGR system and intake manifold clog with carbon: misfires, knock, shaking. Left too long, on some engines it ends with a blown head gasket.
• Cooling. A hybrid has separate circuits for the engine and the inverter; coolant to Toyota spec only. With overheating we check both circuits.

Common issues on petrol Toyotas

• Oil consumption. On a number of petrol engines the piston rings stick and oil gets burned. We check compression and plugs, then suggest decarbonising or a repair based on results.
• Misfires. Coils and plugs, less often injectors. We find the cylinder from scanner data instead of replacing everything.
• VVT-i valve. Dirty oil — and the cam phaser starts throwing errors.
• Water pump leaks and thermostat. In Batumi heat a weak cooling system overheats fast.
