SRS (Airbag)System Repair

Why the airbag light comes on

• Clock spring (steering wheel spiral cable) — wears out from turning the wheel. Steering wheel buttons or the horn often stop working at the same time.
• Connectors under the front seats — side airbags and belt pretensioners. They corrode or come loose when seats are removed or the interior is cleaned.
• Crash sensors in pillars, doors or the bumper — after even a light collision or body repair.
• Passenger seat occupancy sensor — switches the passenger airbag off and can log a fault.
• Deployed parts — an airbag, pretensioner or SRS module after a crash, with crash data stored.
• Low voltage — a weak battery can briefly set an SRS fault.

Auction imports: what to watch for

Many cars come to Georgia after accidents. Sometimes a deployed airbag is replaced with an empty dummy or a resistor "bypass" just to turn the light off. The light is out, but there is no protection. During diagnostics we check that the module sees real components, and inspect them physically if in doubt. Worth doing as part of a pre-purchase inspection too.

How we repair it

• Read SRS module codes and identify the exact circuit.
• Check connectors and wiring with the battery disconnected, following safety rules for pyrotechnic parts.
• Replace the faulty part: clock spring, sensor, wiring, connector.
• If the SRS module holds crash data after an accident, it has to be restored or replaced — the code in such a module cannot simply be erased.
• Final check: no codes, the light goes out after the self-test.
