How a DPF works

The DPF sits in a diesel's exhaust and traps soot. From time to time the ECU burns off the collected soot — this is regeneration, and on long loaded drives it happens by itself. On short city trips regeneration cannot finish and the filter clogs. Ash that does not burn stays behind and gradually reduces the filter's capacity.

Symptoms

• DPF warning light or check engine light.
• The engine goes into limp mode and feels weak.
• Frequent regeneration attempts: raised idle, the fan running after you stop, a burning smell.
• Higher fuel use, rising oil level (fuel gets into the oil with frequent regenerations).

Why it clogs — we find the cause

Cleaning the filter without finding the cause means coming back soon. We check:

• the differential pressure sensor and its pipes;
• exhaust temperature sensors;
• injectors and the turbo: excess fuel or oil means extra soot;
• the EGR valve — a faulty one increases soot;
• engine oil: diesels with a DPF need low-ash oil to the manufacturer's spec.

• Fixing the cause: sensors, injectors, EGR, leaks.
• Forced regeneration with the scanner, if the filter condition allows.
