Valve Adjustment in Batumi

Valve Adjustmentin Batumi

Valve adjustment in Batumi at PRO SERVICE (Airport Highway 212): on a cold engine we measure the clearance of every valve with feeler gauges, compare it with the manufacturer's spec and set it with adjusting screws or new shims. From … GEL, takes 2-4 hours. Before the job we check if your engine needs adjustment at all.

Which engines need it

Only engines without hydraulic lifters need adjustment — the gap between cam lobe and valve is set mechanically and changes over time. Such engines are common in many Japanese and Korean cars and in a number of diesels. If your engine has hydraulic lifters there is nothing to adjust; a tick there means checking the lifters and oil pressure.

The check interval is in the manufacturer's schedule. On a used car with unknown history, checking the clearances right after purchase is sensible.

Signs of wrong clearances

  • Too much clearance: a sharp, fast ticking from the top of the engine, louder when cold; less power because the valve opens less.
  • Too little clearance (tight valve): no noise, but the valve does not fully close. Rough idle, hard cold starts, low compression. This is the dangerous one: the exhaust valve overheats and burns — then it is a cylinder head repair.
  • Smoke or popping in the exhaust, higher fuel use.

How we do it

  1. Let the car cool down: clearances are measured on a cold engine.
  2. Remove the valve cover, coils and anything in the way.
  3. Turn the crankshaft by the marks and measure each valve with a feeler gauge, writing down the results.
  4. Screw adjusters — loosen the locknut and set the gap. Shims or buckets — calculate the required thickness, remove the camshafts if needed and fit new shims.
  5. Re-measure, new valve cover gasket, reassemble.
  6. Start-up and check for noise, misfire and fault codes.

You get the measurement sheet: it shows which valves were out of spec. If the valve cover gasket is leaking, we replace it on the same visit — the cover is off anyway.

What affects the cost

  • Adjustment type: screws are quicker, shims often mean removing the camshafts.
  • Number of valves and heads (inline four or V engine).
  • How many shims need replacing and whether they are in stock.

FAQ

How do I know if my engine has hydraulic lifters?

By the model and engine code. Tell us the make and engine size when booking and we will check in advance.

My valves are ticking — can I keep driving?

For a short while, yes: ticking from a large gap is annoying but not urgent. Worse is no noise with a tight gap: that is how valves burn. Do not put the check off.

How much does a valve adjustment cost?

From … GEL for labor. Shims and the valve cover gasket are extra.

How long will it take?

2-4 hours on screw-type engines; longer with shims if they need to be ordered.
