Which Mercedes we see
Mostly C-Class, E-Class, ML/GLE, Sprinter and Vito: supercharged or turbo petrol engines (C180, C200, E200) and CDI diesels. Many cars in Georgia are imported used from Europe and the US with unknown service history, so we start with diagnostics rather than guessing with parts.
Common Mercedes engine problems
- Timing chain stretch. On a number of petrol engines — a rattle for the first seconds of a cold start and camshaft position codes. More on Mercedes timing chain replacement.
- Oil in the camshaft adjuster connectors. On some engines oil wicks through the camshaft solenoids into the wiring; left alone, it can reach the engine control unit.
- Oil leaks. Oil filter housing, oil cooler, valve cover, crankcase ventilation. On a hot engine it is also a fire risk.
- CDI diesels. Failed injector seal washers — soot build-up and exhaust smell under the bonnet; seized glow plugs that must be removed carefully so they do not snap.
- Drive belt. Almost all modern Mercedes engines have a timing chain, so "the engine belt" is usually the serpentine belt for the alternator and A/C with its tensioner and pulleys. Squeal, cracks or a shaking tensioner mean the set should be replaced.
What matters with a Mercedes
- Many faults are only visible with a Mercedes-capable scanner: we look at live data — fuel trims, cam timing, pressures — and do not stop at codes.
- On diesels, after injector replacement the injector codes are written to the engine control unit; without it the engine runs rough.
- Oil and coolant strictly to the Mercedes-Benz approval for your engine (MB approval from the service book).
- After the job: codes cleared, adaptations, test drive and a repeat leak check.

Where is the timing belt on a Mercedes?
Most modern Mercedes engines have no timing belt — they use a chain. The belt usually replaced is the drive belt for the alternator and A/C.
