When you need a rebuild — and when you do not

A rebuild makes sense when wear has reached the block and rotating assembly:

• low compression in several cylinders rather than one;
• the engine burns oil by the liter, blue smoke, oil-fouled plugs;
• main or rod bearing knock, oil pressure dropping on a hot engine;
• scored cylinder walls seen with a borescope;
• damage after severe overheating or oil starvation.

If the problem is only in the head (a burnt valve, leaking stem seals, a blown gasket), a cylinder head repair or head gasket replacement is enough. That is why we start with engine diagnostics: it often points to a far cheaper repair.

How a rebuild goes

1. Removal and teardown. The engine comes out and gets cleaned. Parts are laid out by cylinder.
2. Inspection and measurement. Bores, crank journals, clearances, block and head flatness. The result is a quote with a parts list.
3. Machining. Honing, boring to an oversize or sleeving, crankshaft grinding. Which one depends on wear.
4. Cylinder head. Valves lapped or replaced, new stem seals, flatness check.
5. Assembly. New rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, timing set and water pump if needed. Torque values per the manufacturer.
6. Start-up and break-in. We check oil pressure, leaks and running in all modes. Then we explain break-in and the first oil change.

What affects the cost

• Engine layout: inline or V, gasoline or diesel, turbo or not.
• How much machining is needed and whether oversize parts exist.
• OEM or quality aftermarket parts (…).
• Related work: turbo, injectors, radiator, engine mounts.

Sometimes a used engine is the better deal. If a rebuild costs more, we'll say so and compare both.
