Torque ConverterRepair

Torque converter repair at PRO SERVICE (Batumi, Airport Highway 212): we confirm the fault with diagnostics, remove the gearbox and rebuild or replace the converter. Automatic transmission diagnostics from … GEL, torque converter repair from … GEL, time 3-5 days.

What a torque converter is and why it wears

The torque converter sits between the engine and the automatic gearbox and transmits torque through fluid. Inside are the impeller, turbine, a stator with a one-way clutch, and the lock-up clutch that locks engine and gearbox together while cruising.

The lock-up clutch wears most. Its debris goes into the fluid and on to the valve body and solenoids, so a neglected converter eventually takes the gearbox down with it.

Symptoms

  • Shudder at steady light throttle around 60-90 km/h, like driving over rumble strips — lock-up clutch slipping.
  • RPM flare at constant speed without pressing the pedal.
  • Hum that follows engine RPM, not road speed.
  • Weak take-off with a healthy engine — possible stator one-way clutch failure.
  • Overheating transmission fluid, lock-up fault codes.
  • Fluid leak between engine and gearbox — often the converter seal.

How we confirm it

  1. Scanner: fault codes, lock-up slip, fluid temperature.
  2. Fluid: color, smell, metal and friction dust.
  3. Road test with live data logging.
  4. Rule out look-alikes: engine mounts, driveshaft, lock-up solenoid in the valve body. A faulty solenoid gives the same symptoms but is fixed without removing the gearbox — see automatic transmission repair.

Repair or replace

A torque converter is sealed: to rebuild it, it is cut open, the lock-up lining, bearings and seals are replaced, then it is welded and balanced. If the impeller, turbine or housing is damaged — replacement with a new or remanufactured unit. Decided after opening it up and agreeing with you.

After the repair we always change the transmission fluid and flush the cooler, otherwise old debris returns into the new unit.

FAQ

Can I keep driving with converter shudder?

Not for long. Every kilometer with a slipping lock-up contaminates the fluid and valve body, and the job can grow into a full gearbox rebuild.

Will a fluid change fix it?

In early stages it sometimes reduces shudder, but it does not restore a worn lining. Diagnose first.

How long does the repair take?

3-5 days including gearbox removal; exact time after opening the unit.

Does the gearbox have to come out?

Yes, the torque converter only comes out together with the gearbox.
