When to Replace Brake Pads: Signs and Checks

When to Replace BrakePads: Signs and Checks

Replace brake pads by actual wear, not by the calendar: when the friction material reaches the manufacturer's minimum, the wear sensor or indicator squeals or lights up, you hear metal grinding or the pedal feels different. Pad life varies hugely between cars and drivers, so the reliable approach is to look at the pads at every service and tire change.

Why there is no single replacement mileage

Pad wear depends on how and where the car is driven:

  • city and traffic — lots of low-speed stops, pads wear faster than on the highway;
  • mountain roads — long descents heat the brakes; around Batumi and in mountain Adjara this is normal;
  • vehicle weight and load — a crossover with a full trunk brakes harder than a sedan;
  • driving style — hard braking at every light eats friction material noticeably faster;
  • pad compound — softer pads are quieter but wear faster; harder ones last longer but wear the disc more.

So advice like "replace every so many thousand" means little. The guide is the manufacturer's schedule and the real pad thickness.

Signs the pads need replacing

  • Squeal when braking. Many pads have a metal indicator tab: once the material is worn, it touches the disc and squeals. Book a visit in the next few days.
  • Metal grinding. The material is gone and it is metal on metal. Braking weakens and the disc is quickly ruined. Driving like this is dangerous.
  • Wear warning on the dash. If the car has an electric sensor, the light comes on. The sensor is usually replaced with the pads.
  • The pedal goes lower. Can mean worn pads, but also air or old brake fluid — needs checking.
  • The car pulls when braking. Uneven wear, a sticking caliper or seized slide pins.
  • Vibration in the wheel or pedal. Usually a disc problem, but often comes together with pads.
  • Brake fluid level has dropped. As pads wear, pistons move out and the reservoir level slowly falls. A sudden drop is a sign of a leak.

Why front pads wear faster

Under braking the car's weight shifts forward, and the front brakes do most of the work. So front pads are usually replaced more often than rear ones. But on cars with electronic brake force distribution and an electric parking brake the rear pads can also wear noticeably — check both axles.

What to check along with the pads

  • Discs (rotors): thickness, lip at the edge, grooves, runout. New pads on a worn disc bed in poorly and may squeal.
  • Calipers and slide pins: if the pins are seized, one pad wears faster than the other. In a humid sea climate this is common.
  • Boots and pistons: a torn boot lets in moisture and rust.
  • Brake fluid: it absorbs moisture, and over time the brakes perform worse when hot.
  • Pads are replaced as a set per axle — both sides at once, otherwise braking is uneven.

After replacement

New pads need bedding in: the first drives without hard stops from high speed. If a squeal appears right after replacement, come back and have the installation checked rather than waiting for it to "settle".

How much replacement costs

The price depends on the axle (front or rear), the model, whether there is an electronic parking brake (sometimes a scanner is needed to retract the pistons) and whether new discs are needed. At PRO SERVICE: pad replacement labor from … GEL, time about an hour; discs from … GEL.

Where to replace brake pads in Batumi

PRO SERVICE, Airport Highway 212, Batumi, does brake pad replacement with a check of calipers, slide pins and fluid, and brake disc replacement when the discs are below spec.

FAQ

Can I replace pads on one side only?

No, only as a pair per axle. Otherwise the car will pull under braking.

Must discs be replaced together with pads?

Not always. If disc thickness is within spec and there is no runout or deep grooves, it stays.

New pads squeal — is that normal?

For a short time after fitting it can happen, but a constant squeal is a reason to check the installation, slide pins and disc.

How often should pads be checked?

At every service and seasonal tire change — taking a wheel off and looking takes minutes.
