A galvanized VW body: what it means for repairs

Many Volkswagen passenger cars (Golf, Passat, Jetta, Polo, Tiguan) have a galvanized body, so they rust less with age than many rivals. If rust does appear on such a VW, the cause is usually something else:

• a chip or scratch to bare metal left untreated for a long time;
• a poor previous repair: filler over rust, welds left unprotected;
• accident damage that broke the protective layer.

So for us the job is to restore the protection, with paint as the last step. We remove corrosion, treat the metal with anti-corrosion primer, seal the seams and treat hidden cavities. Many VWs in Georgia are imported used cars, often with damage already repaired. Before estimating, we use a paint thickness gauge to see where previous repairs were done.

Volkswagen Transporter T4: a story of its own

T4s are older vehicles now, and their bodies need a very different approach from a Golf. Typical corrosion spots owners report on the T4:

• wheel arches and sills;
• the bottoms of the front doors, sliding door and rear door;
• the sliding door lower track and the sill under it;
• the windscreen opening;
• the floor, jacking points and step mounts.

Rust under the paint is often much bigger than it looks from outside. That is why on a T4 we first open up the damaged area and then give the final estimate: a repair section or a full panel replacement. Large flat van sides are painted with a careful blend so the edge does not show.
