Signs your manual gearbox needs attention

• Grinding when engaging one gear — that gear's synchronizer is worn. If every gear grinds, we check the clutch first: it may not be disengaging fully (clutch drag).
• Whine or hum that changes with gear or road speed — shaft or differential bearings.
• Gear jumps out under load or when you lift off the throttle — worn sleeves and detents, sometimes sagging engine and gearbox mounts.
• Stiff shifting or a sloppy lever — often not the gearbox itself but the shifter linkage or cables.
• Oil leaks at the driveshaft seals, input shaft seal or casing joint.

How we diagnose

1. A drive with the mechanic: which gear and which situation produces the noise.
2. Oil level and condition. Metal particles or a burnt smell tell a lot before anything is opened.
3. Shifter, cables, mounts and seals checked on the lift.
4. If the gearbox must come apart, we remove it, inspect shafts, bearings, synchronizers and gears, and show you the worn parts.

Some problems are fixed without removal: an oil change, adjusting or replacing shift cables, a new driveshaft seal. We don't sell a rebuild nobody needs.

What affects the price

• Drivetrain. A front-wheel-drive gearbox comes out more easily than an all-wheel-drive one with a transfer case and propshaft.
• Scope. One bearing or a full set of synchronizers makes a big difference.
• Parts. OEM, quality aftermarket or a used replacement gearbox — we price the options after inspection.
• Clutch at the same time. With the gearbox already out, a clutch replacement costs less than a separate visit. If the disc and pressure plate are near the end, do it now.
