Why change it if it is "filled for life"

Many manufacturers do not list a manual gearbox oil change or set a long interval. But the oil ages: additives wear out and metal dust from gears and synchronizers builds up. Heat, mountain roads, towing and taxi work all raise the load. Signs the oil is due or low:

• gears are stiffer to engage, especially when cold;
• a new hum that was not there before;
• slight grinding when shifting on the move;
• oil traces under the gearbox and on the driveshaft boots.

It also makes sense after buying a used car with unknown history, and after seal replacement or gearbox repair.

Which oil we use

We match oil to the specification and viscosity in the car's documentation. GL-4 and GL-5 are not always interchangeable: in some gearboxes the non-ferrous synchronizers do not tolerate GL-5 additives. Some manual gearboxes take special fluids — even ATF or the manufacturer's own oil. If the gearbox and differential share a casing, one oil serves both; if separate, we check and change both.

How we do it

1. Warm up the gearbox, put the car level on the lift.
2. Undo the filler plug first — so we know it can be refilled — then the drain plug.
3. Inspect the drain plug magnet. Fine dust is normal; large chips and fragments call for manual gearbox diagnostics and repair.
4. New sealing washers, fill to the lower edge of the check hole, leak check.
