Signs of a worn rack
- A dull knock through the steering wheel over bumps or when turning at a standstill — worn bushings or gear.
- Free play. The wheel turns, the road wheels don't react yet.
- Heavy steering, or a notchy spot at one point in the turn.
- Fluid under the rack, power steering reservoir level dropping. Seals are leaking.
- The wheel won't self-center after a turn.
- On electric power steering (EPS) racks: a warning light, assist that comes and goes.
A knock is not always the rack
Tie rod ends, inner tie rods, ball joints, sway bar links and even the steering column joint can sound the same. So we don't start with the rack. We lift the car, load each joint and find where the play really is. Often a tie rod or an end is enough, and that costs much less. Check the rack boot too. If it's torn, sand and salty moisture get in, the shaft rusts and starts to knock.
Rebuild or replace
- Rebuild — new bushings, seals, gaskets, sometimes the gear set. Works if the shaft and housing aren't pitted by corrosion or badly worn.
- Replacement — new, remanufactured or used rack. Needed if the shaft is pitted, the housing is cracked or a rebuild costs more.
- Which one makes sense, we say after removal and inspection. The estimate comes before any work.

- Rebuild the rack or fit another one. Change the power steering fluid if needed.
- Bleeding and a leak check. On EPS, a fault check with a scanner.
- Wheel alignment and a test drive.

How can I make the rack last longer?
Don't hold the wheel at full lock more than a couple of seconds. Replace torn boots promptly. Watch the power steering fluid level. Curb hits damage the tie rods and the rack too.
