CV JointReplacement

Outer and inner CV joints — different symptoms

• Outer (at the wheel): clicking or crunching when turning under load — for example pulling out of a parking spot at full lock. The most common case.
• Inner (at the gearbox): vibration or jerks when accelerating, especially under load uphill; sometimes a clunk when going from throttle to braking.
• Torn boot: grease sprayed over the inside of the wheel and the suspension. The joint may not click yet, but water and grit are already inside.

On Adjara switchbacks the outer joint works at large angles and under load all the time, and moisture quickly finishes off a joint with a torn boot.

Boot, joint or driveshaft

• Boot only — if the boot tore recently and the joint has no play or noise. We clean it, pack fresh grease and fit a new boot. The cheapest option.
• CV joint — if there is clicking, play, or water already inside.
• Complete driveshaft — if both joints are worn, the shaft is damaged, or separate joints are not sold for the model. Sometimes this is faster and cheaper.

How we do it

1. Check: boot inspection, joint play, test drive to confirm clicking or vibration.
2. Removing the wheel, undoing the axle nut, disconnecting the ball joint or tie rod end.
3. Removing the driveshaft; on some cars the inner joint comes out of the gearbox — we check the gearbox oil level.
4. Replacing the joint or boot, fresh grease, new clamps.
5. Refitting, torquing the axle nut to the manufacturer's spec, test drive.

If the ball joint or tie rod end was disconnected, we check the wheel angles and do a wheel alignment if needed.
