Rust along the bottom of the door
A door has drain holes at the bottom. When dirt clogs them, water sits inside and the metal rots from within. First the paint bubbles along the lower edge, then rust streaks show. Before painting we clear the drains, clean the rust down to metal and treat the cavity with rust protection, otherwise the bubbles come back.
What affects the price
- Dent size and whether it reaches a body line or the edge of the door.
- Rust on the edge: cleaning, or cutting out and welding in new metal.
- A blend into the fender or the adjacent panel.
- Paint type: solid, metallic or pearl.
- What has to come off: handle, trim, mirror, door card if the dent must be pushed out from inside.
Trim and door cards sit on plastic clips that often break on removal. We fit new ones so nothing rattles. It's a small separate line in the estimate.

Why is the fender sometimes painted too?
If the car's paint has faded, a fresh door looks brighter. A smooth blend into the fender hides the difference and costs less than painting the whole fender.
Is it cheaper to replace the door or repair it?
Small and medium dents are cheaper to repair. If the door frame or hinges are damaged, we price both options.
How long will it take?

Is the door painted on the car or taken off?
Usually on the car. We take off the handle, trim and mirror and leave the door on its hinges. It comes off only when the frame needs repair or the door opening needs paint.
What about a long key scratch along the whole door?
If your fingernail doesn't catch, the scratch is only in the clear coat and polishing is often enough. If it reaches the primer along its length, we paint the whole door. A spot blend on a long scratch would show.
