Alternator / Serpentine Belt Replacement

Alternator / SerpentineBelt Replacement

Serpentine belt replacement at PRO SERVICE (Batumi, Airport Highway 212): we inspect the belt, tensioner and pulleys, fit a new belt following your engine's routing and check tension and charging. From … GEL labor, takes 30-60 min.

Not the timing belt

The alternator belt (drive, serpentine or ribbed belt) runs outside the engine. It drives the alternator and, depending on the model, the power steering pump, AC compressor and water pump. The timing belt keeps the engine's shafts in sync and sits under a cover — that is a separate job: timing belt replacement.

Signs of wear

  • Squeal on start-up, especially in the morning, in damp weather or when the AC kicks in.
  • Cracks across the ribs, fraying, worn edges, a glazed shiny surface.
  • The belt walks off or flutters while running — often the tensioner or a pulley.
  • Battery warning light flickers, steering gets heavy, AC blows warm.

If the belt snaps, the battery stops charging, and on engines where it drives the water pump, overheating follows quickly. The interval follows the manufacturer's schedule; humidity and heat age rubber, so we judge by condition, not mileage alone.

What we replace with the belt

  • Automatic tensioner. If the arm jumps, the damper knocks or a new belt still squeals.
  • Idler pulleys. Humming, play, rough bearing rotation.
  • Alternator clutch pulley (on some models). Wear causes belt vibration and noise.

We show you what is worn and agree on replacements before work.

How we do it

  • Record or photograph the belt routing.
  • Release tension, remove the belt, check pulleys for play and wobble.
  • Fit the new belt and set tension (manual tensioners to the manufacturer's data).
  • Start up, check for squeal under load (lights, AC, steering) and charging voltage.

If charging is still off with a new belt, we test the alternator.

FAQ

How much is a serpentine belt replacement?

From … GEL labor. Price depends on access: on some models the splash guard, wheel or an engine mount is in the way.

My belt squeals — can it be tightened?

With an intact belt and a manual tensioner, sometimes. Automatic tensioners aren't adjusted: squeal usually means a worn belt or tensioner.

Can I drive with a squealing belt?

Not for long. Squeal means slipping, so the alternator undercharges, and a worn belt can snap.

Should the serpentine belt be replaced together with the timing belt?

If the drive belt has to come off for the timing job anyway and it isn't new — usually yes. The labor is already done, you only pay for the belt.

How long does it take?

30-60 min.
