Signs of a failing alternator

• The battery warning light is on, or flickers at idle.
• The battery drains while driving, not only when parked.
• Headlights dim and pulse with engine speed.
• A hum or whine from the belt area that rises with revs — bearings.
• Belt chatter or vibration when you lift off the throttle — often the overrunning pulley.
• A smell of hot wiring or an overheating alternator.

Alternator or battery?

The symptoms overlap. First we measure voltage with the engine running under load (headlights, fan, heaters) and test the battery. If charging is fine but the battery will not hold charge, it is the battery that needs replacing, not the alternator. If the battery drains while parked, that is a parasitic drain for the auto electrician.

How we repair it

• Check the belt and tensioner: a slipping belt also undercharges.
• Remove the alternator. On some models it sits deep and other parts have to come off first — that affects the price.
• Strip and inspect: brushes and slip rings, voltage regulator, rectifier, bearings, windings.
• Replace worn parts, or the whole unit when repair is not worth it.
• Refit and verify charging under load.

On many newer cars the engine computer controls the alternator, and the voltage "floats" by design — that is normal, not a fault. We test such systems with scanner data.
