Dry vs wet DSG

A DSG has two clutches: one for odd gears, one for even. While you drive in one gear, the next is already engaged, so shifts are almost instant. Everything is controlled by the mechatronic unit — electronics and hydraulics in one block.

• Dry 7-speed (DQ200) — clutches run without an oil bath. Fitted to compact and mid-size VW, Skoda, Seat and Audi with smaller engines. Its worst enemy is stop-and-go traffic.
• Wet 6- and 7-speed (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500) — clutches run in oil and handle more torque, but need regular oil and filter changes.

We identify the gearbox by VIN and unit code before quoting — the job and the parts depend on it.

Typical symptoms

• Judder and vibration when pulling away and in 1st-2nd gear — worn clutch or lost adaptation.
• Clunks on downshifts as you brake to a stop.
• Flashing gear indicator, limp mode — mechatronic, hydraulic pressure or sensor faults.
• Odd or even gears drop out — one clutch or its control has failed.
• Rattle at idle that changes when you press the brake — flywheel or bearings.

How we work

1. Read faults and live data: clutch travel and temperature, pressure, adaptation values.
2. Basic settings (relearn). Some judder disappears right after this — with nothing taken apart.
3. Worn clutch — we fit a new kit and always run the adaptation. Without it a new clutch judders and wears out fast.
4. Mechatronic: check sensors, wiring and hydraulics, then repair or replace the unit.
5. Wet DSG — oil and filter change per schedule.

A worn engine mount can cause similar jerks, so we check it before touching the gearbox.
