Winter in Batumi vs winter in the mountains
Batumi itself usually has a mild but rainy winter: downpours, fog, wet roads, short days. Problems are more about visibility and damp than frost. That changes once you drive into the mountains of Adjara or other regions. Snow, ice and real sub-zero temperatures happen there, and a car prepared only for the city gets caught out.
What we check
Battery and charging. Load test, terminals, charging voltage. A battery weakened by summer is the first thing to fail in the cold — if needed, battery replacement.
Coolant. We measure the freeze point: if the system was topped up with water, protection may have dropped. We check color and deposits; if needed, coolant change.
Visibility.
- wiper blades: streaks and squeaks mean replacement;
- washer: jets and a fluid that won't freeze at the temperatures you'll meet;
- heater and windscreen demist — fogging in the rain is dangerous;
- all headlights and lights, beam aim (bulb replacement).
Tires and brakes.
- tread depth and rubber condition — worn tires grip much worse on wet roads;
- for mountain trips — winter or all-season tires, and chains if your route needs them;
- pads, discs, brake fluid: long descents load the brakes heavily.
Other. Door seals, drains, alternator belt, leaks.
Before a mountain trip
Fill the tank, check the spare wheel and jack, take warm clothes and a phone charger. Check road conditions before you set off.

FAQ
Do I need to prepare the car if I only drive in Batumi?
At minimum — battery, wipers, lights, tires and heater. Rain and fog demand good visibility.
Which tires do I need for the mountains?
Depends on the route and weather. The key point: summer tires don't grip on snow and ice.
Should I change coolant before winter?
Only if it's old or diluted. We measure first.
Why do the windows fog up in winter?
Damp cabin air, a clogged cabin filter, wet floor mats or recirculation left on. The AC in demist mode helps because it dries the air — which is why we check it in winter too.
